Wellbeing for Education Return - Special Units and Independent Schools

Wellbeing for Education Return - Special Units and Independent Schools

Delivered by Alison Siddons, Education Effectiveness Partner in Children & Families Dept. at Leicestershire County Council

The Wellbeing for Education Return programme is a fully funded national initiative from the DfE, DHSC, Health Education England and Public Health England.

The aim is to support schools in meeting the emotional needs of pupils and staff during the pandemic.

The programme runs to Easter 2021, and comprises two phases.

  • Phase one will provide training for key school staff to disseminate to colleagues, and provide a chance for schools to connect with local experts and each other to share knowledge and experience.
  • Phase two will be a tailored programme of training and support to meet the needs identified by local schools in phase one.

Launch, Listen & Link events

Over the next few weeks, we are holding a series of Launch, Listen & Link events for every Special Unit and Independent School in the county. Similar events are also being held for Primary and Secondary Schools.

What is the intention of the Launch, Listen & Link events?

The intention is that the national training content will be adapted for the local contexts, particularly in terms of signposting local statutory and voluntary sector services. The purpose of the launch and listen is to get a local picture of demographics and ascertain the current needs of our Schools. The aim is to make the training practical, responsive to your needs and most importantly, contribute to your Whole School approach to well-being.

Launch

The programme aims to support staff working in schools and colleges, to respond to the additional pressures some children and young people (CYP) may be feeling as a direct result of the pandemic, as well as any emotional response they or their teachers may be experiencing from bereavement, stress, trauma or anxiety over the past months.

Listen

The training will be offered to every Special, Units and Independent Schools in England, to help support pupil and student, as well as staff and parent/carer wellbeing, resilience and recovery in the context of coronavirus. The aim is to also prevent longer-term mental health problems developing, as well as helping to manage and support those who have pre-existing difficulties that may have been exacerbated by coronavirus.

Link

Sessions will evolve depending on the current need of the Schools, linking sessions will be made available to link with other stakeholders that can support with well-being.

Will there be any follow up support?

Sessions will evolve depending on the current need of the Schools, linking sessions will be made available to link with other stakeholders that can support with well-being.

  • Network meetings within the clusters, to discuss relevant areas of need and different challenges that may be faced along the way. We acknowledge trauma is not linear and will pose different challenges at different times.
  • In house support in the form of School drop ins (Virtually and over the phone).
  • A developing website to signpost a range of well-being resources and agency support.

The programme uses a Whole-School Approach to achieve maximum impact.
